Panchakarma Treatments

Back to Ayurveda Section

Vamana | Virechana | Basti | Nasya | Rakta Mokshana

"A healthy body is the guest-chamber of the soul; a sick, its prison." Francis Bacon

"Diseases are of two types; those that arise from within and those that arise from without. Their sites are also two – the body and the mind." Astangahrydaya Sutrasthana

Panchakarma is the core of Ayurvedic therapies. "Pancha" means five and so it is a set of five cleansing and eliminating treatments. The aim is

  • to purify the body, ridding it of toxic elements
  • to build up the body’s own immune systems, thereby increasing its natural ability to fight disease
  • and to rejuvenate the body.

So panchakarma treatments are used to both treat most chronic and deep-seated ailments as well as to reinforce good health.

Vamana (Emesis Therapy)

This treatment is the process of eliminating toxic waste of the body through vomiting. this involves snehana (both internal and external lubrication of the body) and swedana (inducing of sweating through fomentation), followed by inducing vomiting on the last day. This therapy is effective in the diseases of kapha in general and specifically in chronic cough, asthma, acid-peptic ailments like gastritis, indigestion, bloating, skin infections, migraine, etc.

This therapy is recommended for diseases of vata in general and specifically for neuromuscular ailments, gastrointestinal disorders like gastritis & colitis, degenerative disorders like osteoporosis, menstrual disturbances, genitor-urinary disorders, etc.
